Area(s) of Specialization/Research Interests
Cancer biology, protein biochemistry, and toxicology
Profile
Babalola Benjamin Ayo obtained his B.Sc. Biochemistry (First class, Hons.) from the Mountain Top University, and Foundation degree from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Having finished with a Cumulative GPA of 5.0 (on a scale of 5.0) in both Universities, he was gained a number of recognitions and awards. He was also awarded the best overall WASSCE student (2013/2014) by the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba. He has been nominated for the National President Honors Award for Outstanding Youth Service (2021) and was awarded the Honor's Award by the Kogi State Government and National Youth Service Corps' (2020) for an impactful national service.
His research interest is at an interface of protein biochemistry, toxicology, and molecular oncology. His interest focuses on understanding the mechanism of enzyme catalysis in fostering the initiation and progression of diseases like cancer. In particular, he intends to understand the dynamics and function of the telomerase enzyme in cancers and stem cells, and how the enzyme can be controlled at a molecular scale to prevent cancer's replicative immortality. He is also interested in understanding the role of telomerase in the varied responses of cancer patients to immunotherapy. He is optimistic that findings translated from this study will engender improved cancer treatment in Nigeria and beyond.
